I have just been told by a Certified Dodge garage that I am going to have to replace my engine in my 4x4 '99 Dodge Dakota with a mere 72000 miles on it. I had a 5.9 liter, Mag V8. The mechanic did not get into the truck for a complete investigation of the engine but did see that the engine block was cracked and the inside is mush (brown oatmeal). He seemed perplexed because he knew and serviced this truck on a regular basis. I am looking for suggestions on what to do. They claim it will cost me 5000 dollars to replace. I have been looking for engine replacements on the internet and in local garages, salvage yards but can't seem to find anything for a 99. Anybody have any ideas? Are there other engines I can put in (ie. 5.2 liter)?

Re: Need a new engine for Dodge Dakota 99
You could opt for the 5.2 but it's gonna cost so close to the same amount that it wouldn't be worth it.
You should try and find a wrecked truck at a wrecker with the motor you need. You should be able to get it for a few hundred bucks, but you'll have to put it in yourself, which is easy anyway...

If you can't rebuild it yourself, get it done right. I've used their engines. They were a pleasure to deal with. 5.2/5.9 doesn't matter, both will fit. 5.2 lacks the power you're used to with the 5.9L.
