Lock Replacement

Hey guys,

My wife had her purse stolen this past Monday. She carries a key to my Tahoe on her chain. Now, whoever stole her purse (and our minivan) has a key to my Tahoe and my address. I called the dealership to see about changing locks, and they quoted me $760. I about fell out of my chair. That is ridiculous. So, I was wondering if anyone here had any advice about other alternatives. I really don't have $800 to shell out right now.

Thanks...

Re: Lock Replacement

Call a locksmith and get a quote. Chevy doesn't necessarily have to do it. I don't believe anyway.

I've thought about that. However, my key has the "chip" in it, so a locksmith would only be able to change the outer locks (which may be enough). This would require two different keys to the vehicle, but that may not be too bad, since I mainly use the key fob anyway. I'm going to call someone today about it. Hopefully, their price will be a little more reasonable.

Re: Lock Replacement

locksmiths can rekey your ignition..... have you tried asking about just reprogramming the tahoe not to accept the key (computer chip)

Re: Lock Replacement

Rowdy, been there done that its a pain. My Mother had her purse stolen around 6 months ago. I had to Contact ADT to disable her keyfob remote & show here how to use her home alarm manually. ok no biggie.
I went to the GM dealer & had them program the keyless entry remote & the chip in the key as well as get new sets made this way they can't take off with the car (since she doesn't keep valuables in it typical grandma junk) not too much of a hassle

I needed to recode her home 10 locks & deadbolts all with the same key code this was a pain.

So far no problems besides a few extra credit card charges from the low life loser which she declined. Citibank actually attempted to charge my Mom for charges on the card after we reported it stolen what fricken idiots! And Verizon I called them that day to shut the phone off & I said screw paying for a new one thru them we couldn't stand their crappy customer service. They decided to put a hold on her account when I told them just cancel it & send us the final bill. Meanwhile they accrued additional fees & even sent her to collections for a phone that was supposedly shut off.

Bottom line keep a close eye on your personal belongings
