Coolant

I'm planning to flush out my coolant and "stuff" and put new fluid in there soon. I know we're supposed to use like 50% coolant stuff and 50% water, right? So would I just be using tap water or water from water bottles or what? Also, what kinda coolant stuff do you guys use? Any recommendations? I was thinking Prestone!?!

I use bottled water, those large jugs that you can pick up at the local supermarket for like three or four bucks. As for coolant, I am drawing a blank....

Re: Coolant

If you are lazy, autozone sells premixed 50/50 stuff. It costs a bit more, but it saves you the hassle.

REALLY? I've alwaysed used 100% coolant. I never mixed water into it cause of oxydation. Plus I live in Miami and its Hot Hot Hot! am I damaging anything by feeding it all coolant?

Re: Coolant

Igovert500, at Kragen, they have this stuff that's called Peak or something and it is premixed 50/50. But I've never heard of the brand before. Is it any good? Or are all coolants the same thing!?!

Re: Coolant

Also, do you guys literally measure out the water and coolant or just approximate?

Re: Coolant

As far as I am concerned, coolant is coolant, but anyone is welcome to prove me wrong. I don't think brand really matters.

Re: Coolant

Well, I changed my coolant today and it was SOOOO GROSSS!!!! I don't think the first owner ever changed it before. SICK! We flushed the whole thing out and it took awhile before the water started to come out clear. Well, I ended up using Prestone and mixing everything myself. I even measured out the amount of water and coolant going into my engine. LOL

It is good that you drained and flushed your cooling system. From experience working in an auto repair shop, I have learned it is good to flush and clean the cooling system at approximately once a year or year and a half, (some may disagree). If the coolant isn't replaced after a long period of time the anitfreeze can and eventually will turn acidic and literally eat the radiator and all other components included in the cooling system. When in doubt, do the proper maintainance.
