an enjoyable loss

Ok, so basically, today was my day off from work, but my coworker convinced me I should go in and work for a few hours, then clock out and clean my car(it's a detailing center). So I gave into peer pressure, and did. So the day draws to an end and my vr4 is looking damn good. But everyone was moving slow at the end of the day, so cleaning up took extra long. So now I'm pissed because it's 10pm and I should have been out at 9, and it was supposed to be my dayoff, and I already clocked out.

So I pull out of the lot and onto the road, heading towards the highway, my coworker riding shotgun. We get to a light and see a Cobra whip out and make a right hand turn in front of us, and turn onto the highway we are getting onto. Well finally the light turns green and we take off after him. I redlined 1st through 3rd, and passed by him doing 110 or so in 4th. I slow down and let him catch up. All of a sudden he is catching up damn fast in my rearview, so I gun it. We both pull dead even and are flooring it. We can just hear his supercharger whining and his exhaust screaming, it was beautiful. Well I almost redlined 4th and shift into 5th, we are keeping pretty even at somewhere around 130-140mph he shifts and pulls a car or 2 ahead of me.

I chased for a little bit longer, but wasn't making up ground, and 140 was about as fast as I wanted to take it. So we both let off and braked, taking it down to about 80. He lets me pull up to him and we look over and count down and both gun it, I've downshifted to 3rd at this point, and am using up my last 1/8 of a tank of gas pretty damn fast. Well we both go, and as I am going in 3rd at about 5500rpms, he shifts to 4th and just leaves me like I am standing still. He gains plenty of cars on me as I shift to 4th. So the highway is winding down to a 45mph road again, so we both let off as traffic and street lights are approaching ahead. So we go for a few miles, cruising next to each other, I shifted to 6th at this point cruising at 2,000 to save what precious little gas I have left. We'll traffic is slowing down in front of him, and I have a large gap in front of me, so I slow down and motion for him to cut in front of me, so he does. Then he accelerates to try and line up at the next redlight. So he passes the slow traffic, and heads towards the yellow light, both of us in the left lane.

So he cuts over to the right, and is coming to a stop when this jackass in a neon decides he wants to prove himself and get involved. So the neon cuts me off, well the cobra in turn cuts the neon off. So the neon shifts lanes again in an attempt to line up with the cobra, but the cobra dodges in and cuts him off...again. Meanwhile, I am behind the two, trying to figure out which lane to line up in. So after all this idiocy, the cobra ends up in the right lane with the neon behind him, probably pretty pissed off. But that's what he gets for trying to ruin a perfectly good race. So I am in the left, slow down to 10mph and the damn light turns green, so I just shift back into 2nd and cruise, as does the cobra, and then he turned off at the next light, as my passenger expressed his feelings to the driver of the neon. As we passed the turning cobra, I saw him smiling, and said 'sweet ride' in return.

So we didn't get to line up, which would have been sweet, because I'm thinking I could have taken him off the line with AWD... So overall it was a loss for me, but a damn sweet race. Taking it up to 140 was a damn good time with him right next to me. I don't know if he was stock or not, he did pull hard on me twice in 4th gear though, and his supercharger and exhaust were really loud. I couldn't even hear my car. Definantly one of the top races I've been in for quite some time, and made up for the fact that my dayoff sucked!

Re: an enjoyable loss

nice death, really nice death. that sounds like fun. i would expect a 03 cobra to win regardless but i wonder if it was stock or not? those things are fast. i was in my dads vette once and a cobra pulled up next to me and had me thinking if i was gonna loose or not.

we didn't end up racing

Now that sounded like a fun set of runs Too bad about the Neon getting in the mix and preventing one more go at it.

Re: an enjoyable loss

Danno, I'm pretty much stock right now, just the intake and strut bars(but they didn't really help out there). But I didn't really hang with him VERY long, he caught up from behind, and pulled on me 2x, it was just those moments, when the gearing was evenly matched and the rpms were soaring that we were even, but when he shifted, he left me. It was damn exciting though, I kept looking for blue lights in the rearview, but luckily none this time.

Which is why hardly anyone posts race stories anymore!

Anyhow, I read the whole story and I must say that those were some pretty good races, win or loose. It is pretty nice when people aren't assholes and can just be cool to eachother.

Well it would have been nice to, you know, add paragraphs instead of a big blob, but still.
