94 Jetta Gls 2.0 stalls on Hiway

Hello Guys and Gals...
well I'm new here and I'm hoping you can give me some kind of advise as to whats happening to my daughters 94 Jetta III GLS, Automatic Trans, 2.0
Okay..when driven on the freeway it stalls like its not getting gas, it doesn't die but when you depress the excellerator nothing happens, the car just surges the rpms don't seem to drop off like its dead it just seems like its getting no gas..now the kicker..when driven on the street no problems at all the car drives fine. can it be the fuel pump is going out? fuel filter? I ran fuel injector cleaner in the tank with no change.. All replies will be surely appreciated.. thanks

I'd look into the last time the fuel filter was changed. Or possibly the catalytic converter? Does the exhaust sound funny when revved for a few seconds?

Thanks for replying, The truth of the matter is I dont know when the last time the fuel filter was changed being that we purchased the car used from private party about a year ago. I'll check the tonation of the exhaust tomorrow, by sounding funny do you mean resonance? or something else.
I will change the fuel filter tomorrow for starters and wait for your comments on the cat.

When partially clogged they will emit a kind of whooshing sound as pressure builds at higher RMP's.

If you can get a temp gun (infrared)

On 1981 and newer vehicles with three-way converters the difference may only be 20 to 30 degrees. No difference in temperature indicates a defective converter or no air from the air pump (check the air pump diverter valve & plumbing). An increase of 500 degrees or more indicates converter overheating due to a rich fuel condition (check the fuel system) or misfiring spark plugs or compression leaks.

Is a check engine light lit? Has it had a general tuneup of the ignition components lately?
