Loyale Automatic Transmission ID

Can anyone tell me if the transmissions for Loyales were the same from say 1986 to 1993 (or so). I bought a rebuilt trans for my 1991 Loyale, and it was NOT the correct one...the rebuilder said mine was an "old style", and that the 91 uses a newer style. Any info on this? Mine had the speedo connector on the top, the new rebuilt one didnt seem to have one, but had a LOT of electrical connecters on it that mine doesnt have.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maurice

There are 3 different Automatics that came in the Loyales.

The 'old style' that was referred to is a 3 speed automatic (3AT)
They came in 2WD and 4WD

2WD from 85-94 L-series

The 'New style' is the electronically controlled 4 speed (4EAT)
They did not come in a 2WD configuration . They are Full Time 4WD (FT4WD).. for all practical intents and purposes they are the original subaru AWD trans
They became available in 87-94 and are basically the same as as the AWD auto offered in todays subarus.

You got the 4EAT. It will bolt up, but theres a ton of wiring to do and they have their own computer that you would need to locate and install.. way more trouble than its worth

Thanks for your response...The only thing, is that this particualar transmission that was sold to me, would NOT bolt up..the belhousing was about 1-1/2" wider then the original, the transmission itself was bulkier, and the method in which the oil pump inside the transmission was driven by the torque converter was very different. Since making this post, the transmission guy has rebuilt the original transmission from the car, and i will try to get it installed this weekend. It took him almost a MONTH do rebuild this one (though i realize parts are sometimes hard to get.

Thanks again for your response

Sounds like he gave you a Legacy transmission.

Glad you got it all worked out.
