How To:Door Molding/Badging Removal

I am buying a 2000 Silverado Pickup and I am deciding to take off the door moldings. Is it easy to do or is it a complete mess underneath them? If it is a big mess, tell me some ways to avoid it. Thanks.

It's actually very simple...Use a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive underneath the moldings....then using fishing line or a plastic scraper get to where you can pull up a corner of the molding....then just use your hands to gently pull it away from the truck itself...any adhesive left just use a citrus based glue remover like Goo Gone.....don't use goof off. Just take your time because the adhesive is strong.

Thanks for the information regarding the moldings TxNitro. I guess after they have been on the truck awhile, it makes it harder to get that goo off. Oh well. After about an hour and two blisters later, I finally got the goo off. I believe it would be a good idea to make these topics accessible fast and easy. I know in the near future, I will be needing more how-tos. Thanks again.

If you want to remove the emblem...try a piece of either nylon or thick kit string. Take a piece about 18" and tie both ends to some wooded doll then place the string behind the emblem and work it back and forth..the string will get hot and cut through the adhesive.

Then use your goof off....etc

You could also use a fine wire from you mig welder if you are careful.

I actually know that kite is the proper spelling and is it goo off or goo gone?

I know for a fact that peanut butter works great for getting the bumper sticker glue off....that molding adhesive is a little tougher

I thought I saw on another post that you want to use Goo Gone, not Goo Off. It said Goo Off was bad stuff for the paint.

Don't use a blowdryer...you will be there all day. Spend the 20 bucks and get a heat gun. That will make a world of a difference. Make sure, however, to keep your hand moving back and forth so not to affect the paint. Also, for the sticky stuff, use Goof Off and a terry cloth...that takes anything off (except for your paint job).

a blow dryer does take a while.. but i did it.. it took a long time to do it but i used the same stuff one of those truck magazines used and it works although a lil slow it worked it was denatured alcohol to get the glue off at the time i want sure about the glue removers witht he paint and all.. just took a lil elbow grease but i got it.. not a tough project though anyone should be able to do it..

Goo gone is a citrus base solvent for labels etc. it will not harm your paint. Goof-off on the other hand is a weak paint remover which painters use to get goof's off. I would not use it on my vehicle finish.

I have always used Zaino gloss enhancer to remove the glue/gunk left from the adhesive

Heat gun? Hair dryer? I just set my dad's truck out in the sun when it was upwards of 90 degrees, and waited for the metal to get warm. Once the metal is warm, a dab of diesel fuel and a popsticle stick. Came off in under 5 minutes, and I then removed the goo with orange-glo. Worked great, and the paint isn't harmed(you would really notice too, because its black). His 2000 2500 now looks a lot better with zero badges, and those cool factory fender flares. No one be scared of badge removal, its easy(I'm only 15).

I wouldn't recommend Goo Gone. I tried it last night, and it left some minor scratches in the paint. I used Maguire's Swirl Remover which made it look like new again, but I don't think Goo Gone is a good idea. Just my .02 cents.

I cant beleive the goo gone was responsible for the scratches. its simply a liquid, no abrasives. Perhaps there was crud in the rag you were rubbing with, who knows, but I doubt it was the goo gone.
