Starting problems

I have a 96 gmc sonoma and im having trouble starting it, i put the key in and wait for the fuel pump to come on and then shut off and i try it and it dosn't start, then i do the same thing a second time and it usally start's at the most it takes 3 time. i was wondering if it had to do w/ somehting on the steering column or something. Also the engine was just put in after a rebuild. I checked all the wiring and everything is hooked up right any suggestions???

First, replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done fairly recently.

Next get some fuel pressure readings. 1st key on, 2nd key on , etc.

I think you'll find (if it's not a clogged filter), that you've got a tired fuel pump, and will need replacing.

By the way, after each key on cycle, let it sit for a minute or so and watch the pressure, it should hold and not drop.

Hope this helps.

Re: Starting problems

You may have to replace your fuel pump relay.
