Aprilia RS250 a good starter Bike?
I was reading through the forum and the Aprilia Rs 250 came up. I found a used Aprilia RS250 for roughly about $3500. Would this be a good bike to start on?

Has anybody heard about or ridden this bike? I'm pretty sure some of you have because I've been reading posts about them.

it's a two stroke track bike, most people don't use it on the streets. plus they stopped importing these to US. And it's Aprilia, so no doubt expensive parts for maintenance.
I myself is looking for a good bike to start on, but $3.5K for something that's under 600cc and used is too much. Other bikes recommended in this board: Kawasaki Ninja 250 Kawasaki Ninja 500, EX500 Suzuki GS500 Suzuki Katana 600 Suzuki Bandit Suzuki SV650 Honda VTR 250 Honda Hawk GT (below 600) And if you're extra careful, 80s and early 90s 600cc bikes are also good trainers. |

If I could recommend a starter bike (having owned 5 different bikes in the past 5 years) I would recommend the SV. I have worked with a 2000 SV for the track really tricked out putting out 92 hp and 60 or so ft-lbs. The bike i sgreat stock and can turn well (suspension needs a little work to be truly sporty). And it can be tricked out to race WERA or any of the other racing venues (everyone runs a class for SV's pretty much). Just my thoughts though, having started out on a 250, I would buy an SV without thinking twice if I had to start again.

Great! Thanks for the info guys. SO a 600 cc bike would not be too dangerous to start riding with?

Any bike is too dangerous if you dont ride smart...a 125 can kill you as quick as a 1000. If your smart, and ride that way, a 600 is a perfect bike to learn on, and it still has room and ability to grow with you, so you probably wont outgrow it anytime soon. I know the 600 sportbikes they make now are almost impossible to ride to their full potential on the street anymore...I sure haven't found the limit of my RR yet...

If you want to start on a 600cc bike, BUY OLD AND USED. Early 90's 600s are the way to go, with the exception of the SV650(s) because it is more forgiving than almost any other modern 600.

However, I've seen people who are basically 5.5 feet tall and still play around with the R1. Crazy! Last edited by Z_Fanatic; 06-28-2004 at 09:30 PM. |

Re: Aprilia RS250 a good starter Bike?
I'd never get an Italian bike for my first. Even though $3500 is a pretty good price for an Aprillia.
As for the question, 'are 600s too dangerous to start on', the answer is "some of them are". There is much more to a bike than just it's engine size. You can't go out, buy a MotoGP 500cc race bike and say "I'll be fine since it's only a 500." All 600s are not the same. There are some which do make decent first bikes, but many are too 'responsive' for new riders to be able to fully control. I'd agree with this list: Kawasaki Ninja 250 Kawasaki Ninja 500, EX500 Suzuki GS500 Suzuki Katana 600 Suzuki Bandit 600 Suzuki SV650 Honda VTR 250 Honda Hawk GT (below 600) except the Hawk GT is a 650cc bike (Honda NT650). It's like the SV650 of the late 80s/early 90s. |
