Rod Knock??
Hi,
'91 Camry 4 cyl. When I bought the car it had @ 90,000 mi and had sat for about 6 months. (got it for a good price). Anyway, there seems to be a "rod knock" It is especially bad when first started and as oil pressure builds the knock decreases in volume. What course of action would you take? Thanks, Steve |

Re: Rod Knock??
Have it fixed before something worse happens as a result. Replacing a rod bearing and oil pump is not that bad - costwise.

Re: Rod Knock??
Relative to an engine rebuild, yes. Relative to an oil change, no. Depends on your prior experience. It is not that difficult. Unless you have worked on the bottom end before, I would leave it to a trusted mechanic who specializes in engine rebuilds. A mistake can be costly.
While the pan is off, replace the oil pump and make sure they check all the bearings, rod and mains. Having a bad bearing can really trash your oil pressure to the rest of the engine. Get it fixed soon. |

Re: Rod Knock??
I guess I have identical problems with you - Rod Knock with a 93 LE!! Noise is terrible at start up then reduces as oil builds up.
Please let me know how you resolved your problems. I'm thinking of doing an engine swap..but the scary costs ranges from 1200-1500 including labor charges. Would like to know what you did to yours |

Re: Rod Knock??
Much easier and cheaper to replace the parts than replace the engine. Unless I'm mistaken, the rod bearings can be replaced from the bottom of the engine by removing the oil pan. However, the noise you're hearing may be something other than a rod bearing. I don't think you can be sure until you look at the bearings visually.
