Winter Driving worth it?
Just wondering if a VR-4 is a much better car vs the normal 3000 GT in the winter.
I know the VR-4 is AWD. I live in Massachusetts and we can get a lot of snow. Is the 3000 GT safe to drive in the winter with the proper tires etc. Or Is the 3000 GT VR-4 with its AWD the best way to go. If anyone can give me some advice that would be great. My friend has a Mustang and with out his snow tires his car was useless. |

Well I have a vr4, and last winter I took it out with a few bald tires, and it was useless as well. It gets lots of momentum from the weight and torque, and the All wheel steering doesn't help too much either. I would assume if you have the right snow tires on a FWD 3000gt it would be fine.

I drove my car the like 20% tread left on them with Michelian XGT Pilots and it drove in the snow like it was a truck or an suv. But if you do drive your car in winter make sure u get the proper maitence and if you can get some used tires caus snow is really hard on them from experience. I went through a foot and a half of snow and didnt get stuck. But bad thing is the cold and really mess things up in ur car so agian make sure to keep good maitence on it or you can be spending alot of money fixing things up.

well for me it wasent my rotors and rims cause every week i would give it a car wash so the salt couldnt settle and currod my car. Things like the internals of an engine plus starting your car in -10 degree weather isnt very good either. For some reason my battery light turned on all the time in the winter. I noticed when it was cold outside my car made this wierd noise everytime i started it and when you start driving your transmission in the cold dosent shift very smoothly either it grinds kinda like when u have a bad snycro. It's ok to drive in winter but just make sure u make the percusion to lestin and look for abnormal things.

Yeah, mine did that too. When driving to class at 8am in subzero temps, the shifting was rigid, and my damn battery died multiple times.

I think the tires make the biggest difference in snow. When I had my FWD Stealth I bought the narrowest steel rims that would fit, also the next size down in diameter (16 inch to 15 inch) and the most aggressive high profile narrow snow tires I could find. I calculated the cost of low profile tires being balanced and put on by the shop every season, not to mention the road tires in the spring, and finding out that they don't make narrow low profiles snow tires. I decided it's better to go with dedicated h/p snow tires, which I could put on and off myself. The drop in diameter size of the rim was to make up for the higher profile and much cheaper snow tire. If you calculate this properly your speedometer won't be screwed up. I should mention that this was my only car and I have to admit that the looks suffered a bit but it was always in my driveway every night and not in a ditch somewhere. The car went great so great that you forgot that it didn't stop as good as it went. The back end got lose sometimes but that's where the ABS came in handy. The tire wear was amazing all 6 tires wore about the same with no front to rear rotation. I later bought a VR$ (ever notice that number four and the money sign are on the same key) the traction, because of width of the tires and the added power made the FWD a better snow car.

no way the VR4 is way better in the snow than the SL hands down.
