Wipers Not Moving

Hi all:

The wipers on my 2000 Accent are not working properly. When you start them they begin to move, slowly, then they stop about halfway through their first cycle. You can hear the motor trying to move them but they don't move. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
vickybri

Probably the nuts that hold the wiper arm to the linkage came loose. Try tightening those up first.

The Nuts are on there as tight as you can get. It must be something else. Is it possible for the wiper motor to be the problem. It doesn't squirt the wiper fluid either.

The wiper motor has nothing to do with the washer, that is a separate motor/pump. If the nuts are tight, and you can hear the motor working, there is probably something broken in the wiper linkage or motor. You will more than likely have to take the wiper cowl off in order to find out anything.

Okay. Could you tell me how to get the cowl off so that I can check the linkage to see if it is broken. So far you've been a great help!

You will have to remove the wipers, and then remove all the clips and/or screws that hold it on. Shouldn't take too long.

I was told by my mechanic that the problem was a defective wiper transmission, a $160 part. Does this sound logical to you?

Sounds right, the wiper transmission is the same as the linkage. Different people call it different things. Only problem with that is that list price on it is only $70.34. If you can hold off, give me a call and I'll sell you one at a discount off of that and ship it to you. I dont' have one in stock, but can have one Tuesday, and ship it out on Tuesday. Unless that mechanic is installing it for free, thats a bit overpriced. Dealerships should be charging about an hour of labor to install it. Most dealers go off of a matrix pricing, where it bumps list price up even more, but even if your dealer does that, it sounds like it'll still be cheaper to have the dealer install it instead, just depending how much your mechanic wants to charge you for installing.

Angry

Well the wipers are working now. At least they are moving. It was the wiper transmission. But I still can't get the squirter to work. I'm guessing that it is the pump motor that's the problem this time around. Does that sound right?

More than likely. Unless the line is clogged, which I have seen a few times. If you can't hear the motor working when you try it, more than likely thats the problem.
