Question I Lost The Gained weight.. Now on Atkins, is this Safe??

Hello everyone. First i'll start by telling you that i am 23, 5'7 and weighed in at 270 in 2002. I got on my own diet, mainly oatmeal in morning, fruit for lunch, and either a little rice with chicken or 2 slices of pizza(one without the cheese of coarse) for dinner. Oh, also coffee-i love coffee, but light on the cream and like maybe 2 sugars. After doing that for like 5 months-and light cardio(walking running etc) i lost 60 lbs. So i went from a size 46 waist to a tight 36. So being at 210, which is still overweight for me(but i was happy) was not hard to maintain. Now, the reason it was easy to maintain was cause i was working 6 days a week. Now i am un-employed. 5 months ago the store i worked for had to close, and i get un-employment now. With all the free time i've had in the last 5 months i swear it friggin wendy's and white castle killed me. I am now at 233 lbs cause of all the junk food. I gained 23 lbs and am at waist 40-yikes. So a week ago i decided to give the atkins diet a try, and let me tell you it works great. I'm never hungry, eat the food i like (eggs w/cheese bacon beef steak etc) and resort to diet soda rather then regular. And i use splenda in my coffee instead of sugar.

After that being said, is this diet-or any other LOW CARB diet bad for you. I swear it i feel like a bull on this diet-all the protein makes your muscle's heal really fast after some weight lifting. I say i am 233 lbs cause last week i weighed 238, so i lost 5-probably mostly water weight but i can see it in my gut. My ideal weight i wanna be is 170-nice and lean you know. But if i get to 190 i'll be happy.

PS.. On the first diet mentioned, i always felt under powered, weak at times. And also starving. With this atkins diet, i have all the energy i need. Atkins says to give up caffiene, but honestly i cannot-still losing weight while drinking it so i think it's working. I want to stay one this diet maybe the next 2-3 months, then go back to moderation in all foods.

All fad diets are bad for your health, the reason is because they restrict your diet, they don't aim to improve it. Instead of taking your current diet and thinking 'hmm what bad stuff should I cut out?', you should start with a clean slate and think 'what foods do I need for energy and nutrition?'

Also, if you want to lose weight, you have to do more than 'light cardio'. Hop on a bike, get into a pool, something that really gets your heart pumping.

Oz, c'mon, explain further. BTW, i'd rather do this diet and not feel STARVING like my past diet. Thats the main reason i'm on it. And by Light cardio, i mean walking a mile a day, then a 10 min jog.

Your cholesterol will be through the roof, as well as your chances of diabetes and heart disease.

Better to be overweight than clog your arteries with plaque.

i agree with everything that has been stated. the atkins diet needs to die off sometime soon.

read up on keytones, they may cause heart disease if you continue to have your body in this state of 'starvation'.

learn what carbs to eat and WHEN. please take our advice, unless you want to hurt yourself in the long run.

consult a Dr. b4 starting a diet like atkins...not everyone needs that kind of diet and it hurts some people rather than help...also that splenda...i don't think that's a good ideal...that stuff can cause health problems

Well, you may hate me for bringing this to the top, but. Sorry people, Atkins isn't going away. unhealthy for you, well I won't say its good for long periods of time ( 1 yr. or more), but for those who need meat and cheese and butter like me, its the only one there is. plus it does work, as does any diet so long as you stick with it.

Re: I Lost The Gained weight.. Now on Atkins, is this Safe??

All these Anti-Atkins things you guys are reading are full of shit! Read the book on how you do Atkins and it's a hell of a lot safer than you think. In fact, it's a LOT safer than a Low Fat diet. And this about ketosis and ketones? You're reading about the WRONG kind of ketosis. Either read the book, or go to www.atkins.com and get the TRUTH!

did the atkins for a few months. i did loose about 40 lbs but went on vacation and stopped going to the gym and it all came back and them some. I spend too muchtime driving and eating road kill food ( fast food ). I guess i have to eat better smaller portions but more often and get more exersise. I work too many hours to exersise. good luck to all of us on our diets.

Re: I Lost The Gained weight.. Now on Atkins, is this Safe??

all u gotta do is cut your portions, dont eat till you are full, but until you feel fine. then pour salt or throw the rest in the garbage or somewhere nasty so you are not tempted to eat it. you can eat the way you usually do for one meal per week and you will be fine. keep walking and running, that burns that shit fast. good luck
