someone told me that you can use a paper clip or something to short out? the computer below the dash and it will flash like morse code (or something along those lines) in your message center and tell you what the problem is without having to take it in to get read. anybody ever hear of this? my service engine soon light is on but the truck is driving fine. 1999 silverado 4.3l v6, 94500 miles or so.

yes this works for the older models below 1994, by putting a paperclip between the two top right plug socket it will flash the codes on the check engine light. it's been so long since i did it, but i do know you have to have the key on and watch the light there is so many seconds between each code.

Autozone?
Do you have an Autozone in your area? They code the cars for free with their OBDII scanner and may even turn the light off if you ask.
I see that Pep Boys has one on sale for $99 |
