K&N air filter does seem to work
Replaced old filter with a cheap ($4.99) Carquest paper filter not long ago, recently I had this weird check engine light problem--light came on shortly (MAF low and O2 lean) if AC is off, if I turn on AC then no light. Installed K&N, engine sounds smoother and no more check engine light so far.

Re: K&N air filter does seem to work
I use K&N filters on both of our cars. ('99 Camry and '97 Escort) They both run like new. The best thing is that they're reusable, and are guaranteed to last the life of the car. If you don't like K&N filters, then go for Fram AirHogs, they work rather well too, and they are reusable as well.
