turbo problem
hey i just put a turbo in my car and everything was working fine, but then i noticed that i wasn't getting the same responce like i was? i took off the hoses asnd noticed that the turbine thing wasn't spinning.... it's not seized because i can move it with my finger and when i rev the engine up it slowly spins if not no spin at all? do you think this would be the waste gate? it just seems like the exhaust is not spinning it at all but just escaping around the turbo??? f**k'd up if you ask me??
my car has the 420a engine (turbo conversion) also i added a oil cooler line it's mounted in the front of my rad and i was wondering is this a good thing or a bad thing that i added the cooler for the oil? also i checked the turbo's oil and it's all their so it is deffinately not seized? |

Re: turbo problem
was the turbo used when you got it, and how hard is it to spin with your finger...like does it spin free or stop as soon as you stop turning it?

Re: turbo problem
IT should turn easily by hand.
What do you mean by "the turbo's oil?"

okay, well the turbo only has 2 oil supply lines (in/out) thats all. yes the turbo spins free but as soon as i stop turning it the turbo doesn't stop instantly but like a split second of a turn left in it, then it stops. it doesn't move side to side or anything so their is no play. and yes the turbo is a little bigger than stock but i rev the car up to around maybe 3500 and it looks like it wants to start to spin but then doesn't?? i doubt that i have to rev the engine to 5 grand just to make it start spoolin?
i have no idea guys what the hell is wrong??? it just seems like the exhaust is going right through the turbo without spooling it up??? weird?? |

also just to add to that when we mounted the turbo to the car the down pipe wasn't connected and i started the car to laugh at what the car would sound like with no down pipe ( it was for a laugh i seriously wasn't going to leave it like that) anyways i started the car and the turbo was spooling up great and everything once i installed the down pipe i then started the car again and the turbo looked as if it wasn't spooling up the same as it was without the down pipe, then i drove the car and it has a little more balls than stock and then it seemed to have the same amount of power as stock. i opened the hood to check things out and that where i found the turbo not spooling??? so maybe that might help you guys about this problem???
thanks again |

Re: turbo problem
Is this with an internal or external WG? What turbo is it? And lastly, what is the exhaust setup. If there is a cat, it could be plugged, and thats the only way I Can see the exhaust making a noticeable difference. But its also important to note that you arent likely to build any boost with no load on the motor, except on very small turbos. Even with the stutter box set to 5500 rpm at full throttle I only get 2-3 psi on my setup. Just reving it I get nothing. I doubt the turbo spins very fast at idle. But it depends on what you have.

i believe that their is an internal wastegate and the exhaust setup does have the cat still on, it is a 420a engine and all i did to it was install the turbo. i have a 5zigen muffler and as far as the rest of the setup it's all stock?? i dunno the turbo i was just playing with it and i found that when you rev the engine the turbo looks as if it wants to spin but when i let go of the throttle the back pressure makes it spin a little more. but when it spins it doesn't spin a full turn it turns like maybe two or three mm if that the turbine doesn't spin fully at all?? but like i said when i had the down pipe not connected the turbo spun like crazy and made that whistle noise that a turbo make, well not that loud but it was faint... i dunno when i hooked up the down pipe and things went wrong???
i'm thinking i will take the down pipe off and drive a fast monster truck at least thats what it sounds like without the exhaust on the car....

Re: turbo problem
How does it build boost when you drive the car?

thats the thing, it doesn't build boost at all. like i said the turbo hardly moves if it moves at all??? i think maybe it could be a leak in the exhaust seal wher it connects to either the inlet or outlet on the turbo? i can hear a sputter noise in the exhaust like somebody drilled a little hole or something not saying that somebody did i'm just saying that is what it sounds like....

Re: turbo problem
How exactly did you spend the money for a turbo kit, and not know what turbo it is? And I don't know too much about 420A's, but I don't think stock fuel is good for much boost.
Ok so you think you have an exhaust leak. It's very possible since it seems like that area was just worked on. Check it out. |

Re: turbo problem
You're still on stock exhaust piping even with the turbo kit? I'd upgrade to at least 2.5 inch piping, that way you can fully reap the benefits the turbo has to offer =)

yeah, well i did get better results with tightening the bolts. i thought my brother in law did that but i guess not....... it does spool better so i think that is all it was. i wanted to change the pipes all to 3" but was unsure if it would be a good move??? what do you guys think?? also is it good to take out the cat and all that other stuff??? thanks for your help guys...

Re: turbo problem
the less resistance to air flow the better. i'v seen some people run just down pipe with no exaust.
