Column to Floor shift conversion

I don't own a chevelle, but it is an A-body so I thought you guys might be able to help because I havent gotten any replies under the olds cutlass area. I have a 1970 Cutlass Supreme that I want to convert from a column to a floor shift, but I really want to keep the bench. I was thinking of a B&M Unimatic or a Hurst Indy Matic-1. Any suggestions. Also, the column shifter causes clearance issues for most aftermarket headers. Would the switch give enough clearanc eor would i have to remove the entire steering column and Put in a new one? Any help would be great. Us GM guys gotta stick together. ;-) hah. Thanx in advance.

well i did the swap to a B&M pro ratchet, (theres a couple pics if you go to the link in my sig). its a relativly easy swap incase you didnt know. all you gotta do is un-bolt the linkage from the tranny and frame then go up to where it attaches to the string cloum,(in the engine compartment), and un do that. then go inside and hit out the pin holding the shift lever and pull that out. then your done with the removal. you will be able to turn the steating column part up so its in the park position and it should stay there(providing your shift patern is the same as a chevy). then you should have the clearance you need for the headers. you only have the arm sticking out of the string column by the rear of the block, if you wanted you could probably just cut it off if you need more room. then you just need to put in the new shifter(not totaly as easy as i it was for me to just say that), but its not really hard. just take your time and defenetly follow the instructon, especialy when it tells you to go through each gear and check how well the cable fits the linkage on the tranny. i have seen shifter on beanch seat cars so it can be done. just get in and set it there and see where it feels good and put it there. if its a far reach you might want to look into one of the shifters that are designed for instalations in trucks because i believe they are taller and would make it so you dont have to reach as far, if that is a problem.

There are two floor shifter styles for early chevelles....one is for the bucket seats and the other is for the bench....go poke around on ebay or call one of the many chevelle parts sellers out there. The bench model is easily recognized by it's long curving sweep to come up around the seat.

incase you didnt catch it. your totaly not talking about the same thing he was. notice i said was, this was weeks ago, but thats still ok. now he is talking about a cutless so dont be chevelle spacifi in your responces, and also, hes not even talking about facotry stuff, hence the B&M being mentioned. just a little sugjestion, read before you post.
