Alternator replacement

So what all is involved in replacing the alternator? I've gota 99Montana. Looks like it was replaced in the past, but with the lower power alternator from the short wheel base van (probalby cause it was cheaper). But my lights flicker and I need the 140Watt one. I can get on on Ebay cheap, but do I have to rotate the motor to get out the alternator?

The manual says that the engine must be rotated forward.

check the post 2000 Montana/lights flicker for the answers 1Bradymichael got. you may have the same problem, and not need an alternator at all. The 105 and 140 amp alternators will not fit into the same brackets, so therefore, I doubt someone replaced a 140a with a 105a, they would have had to change the mount brackets too.

Just replaced mine this weekend. Tough on the knuckles, but the engine does NOT have to be rotated. However, as a consession, it does require that you remove the belt brackets & PS pump, but it will fit through the opening. Also, to gain access to the (2) rear bolt heads, you will need a 15mm "stubby" box end wrench. I couldn't get a conventional socket to stay in place well. Be sure to notate which bolt goes where because they are specific on the Montana; 3-different lengths and or thread patterns. Facing the van, you will need to remove the right-most and closest bolt before the left rear bolt will come out of the hole. In order ... remove right rear, then front, then left rear. This allows you to rotate the alternator forward to remove the last bolt and plug-in connection.

Sorry, I never updated this post. The light flicker was fixed for $5 and 5 minutes of time. It was the voltage regulator ground screw. I ordered the part from the dealer (~$5), and swapped it out. You have to do this "blind" as the screw is behind the motor, so use a magnetic screwdriver. Worst part of the deal was the battery was toast and was replaced last weekend, probably due to the flicker the van had for so long. Battery is MUCH easier to replace than alternator, and probably cheaper too.
