engine swap and tranny questions

i'm working on a 95 metro for my brother. it's and auto. 4cyl. and i was wondering if there are any tips for pulling the engine and putting in a new one. i read somewhere in here that it's easier to pull tranny too. i know nothing about these cars as i am a v8 guy but he needs a hand and i'm free labor. any tips will be greatly appreciated.

the tranny question i have is will the 3 cyl. tranny match a 4 cyl. both automatic. the 3 cyl. is in a earlier metro and the 4 cyl. in a 95.

thank you

Yes, you have to pull the motor and trans for an auto 4 cylinder, or you'll have one hell of a time getting the engine out. Yes, the transmissions are the same. They'll bolt right up.

it is a 4cyl to 4 cyl swap. the 3 cyl is shot. it was just a potential parts car.

thanks for the info geozukigti. it's good to know i have a spare tranny.

What makes it more difficult if it's an automatic to get take the motor out by itself? Is it hard to get to the fasteners? Or is it a space issue?

it's a space issue, after pulling my 3 cyl both ways, it is definately less hassle to pull the whole thing than to try to seperate them in the engine compartment.

Re: engine swap and tranny questions

on the stick you almost have to pull them both to clear the clutch. on the automatic if you remove lower pulley and unbolt torque converter you can pull just the engine by itself without pulling tranny also. on the auto car you only have to pull engine "forward" about 1 1/2" to clear bellhousing
