Recieve Information of the Engine

Hi all,

i'm interested in recieving information about the engine as in the rpm, speed which its travelling etc, now can this information gathered from the socket which you have inside your car.... i'm talking about the computer socket which is normally located under the steering wheel....

if you have any idea how i can do this please inform me.... i have an idea doing a project out of this.. applying IT into this....
