Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

Okay... don't chew me out if this has been covered! But I have heard that there is no law, nor is it illegal to import a car/vehicle, (i.e. R30 Skyline) after 15 years of maunfacturing... The R30 was in production from 1981-1985. Is this fact? I have a friend in Okinawa surrounded by cheap Vintage sports cars and I'm interested in importing one! Other than registering the vehicle over here... what else would I have to worry about? Thanks...

PS--- In case you are wondering: 'Why an R30???' I am an avid fan of sleepers and vintage and semi-vintage Nissans! I also have a 240Z project going on...

For Canada...Canada. Not the US. With the 15 year rule, you'd be able to bring an R32 into Canada, anyway.

If you try to bring the car into the US from Canada, it won't work.

25year rule 1via... You know that!

You've been talking about this R30 project for so long... Why not take a stab at it?

One of my mothers friends has one of the original JDM Fairlady's... Made in the early 60's im pretty sure, convertable, RHD. 100% Legal. Because it's so old.

I want to see this thing man, get it done.

Re: Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

So is the 15 year rule in canada the 25 year rule in the US? I'm in Okinawa now and I would love to bring back one of these:

This is my wife talking to the owner of this nice GTR shop in Itoman Okinawa (I can't speak japanese very well)

Even if I just brought back a rolling chasis then did the engine later, that would still kick ass.

She's a beauty!!!

Ugh This 15yr-25yr. shit gets confusing.... so I guess I gotta go even more vintage and get a car built around 1978 and earlier...? How does the registering of such a vehicle work?

Re: Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

Is that an old style PTU (Power Transistor Unit) I see on that engine? Woah.

Guessing its an R32 powertrain then.

I love that engine... Bare MAF's, single turbo, the cam gears slapping you in the face saying "look at me bitch"

True sleeper right there... Takes a real automotive conesur to recognize the beauty in that project.

Or to build that project none-the-less.

Re: Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

It's an R33 GTS25t 5 speed transmission with the drive shaft cut and welded.

This shop is in Itoman. Just south of Naha. drive down 58 like you are going to the airport, take the bridge but just keep going on that road for a few more clicks, you'll get to central itoman and see a pink GTR outside. the shop is called speedfactory.
These guys don't sell cars though, they just sell engines, tune, swaps and stuff like that. They do have a few front clips and some old GTRs that didn't pass JCI and people just gave up on them. they are usually in bad shape though.

Re: Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

If its an RB25DET... Why does it have twin MAF's?

Or am I missing something here?

No, it's a GTS25t transmission. It's an RB26 engine.

Thanks! You in the Marine Corps?

Although they do not sell cars... I'm glad to hear they sell engines. I am planning on throwing in (well, it's more complicated than that) an RB25 or RB26 in my Z32. Would need the Engine/ECU/Harness and Transmission... I would like to be one of the few in the US with this swap... any idea how much there packages cost?

Re: Importing an R30 Skyline from Japan...

RB26DETT w/ turbos, ECU, harness and all piping except for the intercooler 2200 bucks.

5 speed GTS25t tranny 500 bucks.

they said they would install it in my skyline for 5000.
that setup includes the swap, intercooler, piping, small parts, labor, and the 5 speed mentioned above.

For 7500 they would turn my GTSt (R32) into almost a GTR.
RB26, 4 wheel drive and attezza
