Replace passenger airbag with display or tv

Anybody do or know a good way to put in a display or lcd where a passenger airbag would be?

also does anybody know any good voice recognition software that would work with a music library?

This is the way I did it:
Cut a hole in the cover, build a bracket to hold it up, then build a sort of trim for it like a stereo.

Re: Replace passenger airbag with display or tv

Take the airbag cover out and use it as a template to cut a piece of 3mm ply board that fits nicely into the airbag hole, then cut out a rectangular frame that fits around the screen. when your happy with the fit attach the frame to the board and make sure its nice and strong. and thats it......if you want to make it look really trick you could stretch and staple some fabric over it and then fiberglass it. it'll look cool and you can match it with the car colour..........,,,,,,,,,,,,,.........good luck

Also airbags are only good for high speed crashes, goin about 70+. Going about 30-40 the air bag will kill you thats why i dont like them. Thats also why they make seat belts.

Ok, I hope his friend doens't die in a high speed crash then. If he's not wearing a seatbelt (like so many people do) then what's gonna keep his head from breaking the windshield?? Airbags are in cars for a reason man, and I'm pretty sure you're not with the NTSB.

Re: Replace passenger airbag with display or tv

ight lets pass on the air bag debate, i like ur idea and think it would look really tight and even better with the voice recognition stuff. My only concern is the law... I thought there was one about not having the screen visable to the driver while the car is in motion, with no cover or retraction device its always gunna be in view and therefore u could get a ticket for it. at least i think u can. what would be really sweet is to mount the monitor in some fiberglass that can spin. Then coat the back of ur spinning frame in fiberglass so when its flipped it just looks like part of your dash. just a thought...

first unplug the air bag remove glovebox to find a yellow taped wire going into a yellow harness. this is the same color on all cars wires taped in yellow are airbag. It is not illegal to not have an airbag. Past that take the airbag out or leave it in i don't care just work off of it.
Voice recognition hmmm well the pioneer avic-n1 and 7500, both have voice control. Pair this up with a 90hdd which is the pioneer harddrive peice. Since the screen would do the control you could work it by voice. Sort of, you could tell it to play track 12 folder 9, but as for yelling "put fifty back on In Da CLub" .....

hmm... you could use voice-recog technology to do that in conjunction with a carputer, but it would take a lot of work to train it to that extent... probably not worth it

KevinE326- what kind of car do you have, and is your passanger airbag front-facing or top-facing? if it's front-facing you can just hinge the cover or otherwise remove it. if it's top facing it's tougher, the easiest way is to hinge the cover forward and the screen rearward. i wouldn't mount the PS2 in the glove box, i would remote-mount it and run leads so you still have some usable space there, and the PS2 isn't affected by heat up under the dash.

obviously it's not "crap" to you, KevinE326, since you want to know. and i am not a "honda guy", i am a geek who also happens to be a "car nut"

for you people who would rather sit in mis-educated panic then look, i'll spew some real facts about air bags. air bags typically deploy in any front (or side in some cars) impact with a relative speed of over 10mph (a car hitting a wall going 10mph). air bags are designed to work in TANDEM with a seat belt- the seat belt is still the primary saftey device.
if you are riding or driving in a car without a seatbelt and are injured by an airbag in an accident it's your own damn fault for being so stupid in the first place. for people who are at risk for air bag injuries (very short people, disabled people, etc...) they can have the air bags legally disabled, with a doctor's order, at a dealership.
of course, young children should always be in the back seat, or at least buckled up. in addition, newer vehicles with no back seat, or where there is otherwise nowhere to put a child-safety seat, come with a passanger-airbag disable switch, for the saftey of the young.
airbags on most vehicles manufactured since 1997 also come with "depowered" airbags- 20-35% less force then earlier models.

the rumors that abound about airbags are the same ones that were around when seatbelts were new- "they kill more then they help"- "what if you get trapped"- "i heard about [blah blah blah] that got hurt by one and was crippled for life"... air bags help more then they hurt- period. i don't like 'em especially- like i don't like crumple zones. but i know WHY they are there, and i know that i would rather have them when i need them then not have them and die.

oh- and the passanger friend would probably die from head and neck injuries from the car rolling, after you get distracted by the PS2 and drive off the road. just so you know.
