Stop the Stalling ! !

I have a 1992 Lumina APV, 3.1V6, with 120,000 miles, and it keeps stalling intermittently. As soon as I think the problem is fixed and it runs fine for a few hours or days, it starts stalling again. Currently, the car starts, runs at the normal high idle for around a minute and then starts to lower the idle. As the idle lowers, it becomes sporadic and the after around a minute it stalls and will not restart. It will restart hours later and then stall again after a few minutes.

After it had a tune-up this Spring (plugs, wires, cap & rotor) and a trip to Florida and back, the car started to stall during idle and in drive then not restart (it always cranks good). The car will restart after a few hours, then stall again. This problem has become more frequent as the weeks went by until it stalls after running 5-10 minute. I replaced the AIC motor, Fuel pump relay, MAP, and the coil. Changing these parts did not help. Next, I replaced the fuel pump and the car ran great for a day, then stalled again, and would not start.

I don't know what to do next. Has anyone else out there had this problem?

some stalling problems are cause by a fualty setting in the PCM for your idle speed. this can happen after the battery dies or is disconnected. to reset it, disconnect your battery for 15-20 minutes (by disconnecting the negative cable). hook the cable back up and start the car. it should stall right away. start it again and let it idle high until the engine 'kicks down' on its own. DO NOT touch the throttle at all during this process or you will have to start over. once the engine kicks down, let the vehicle run for 10 minutes or so. hopefully this is the stall problem you are experiencing. its probably the most common one for GM 3.1 v6 engines.

I tried the disconnect the battery and restart, but it still stalls after about 5 minutes and won't restart for a few more hours.

I did find out though that when it stalls, it's not getting any spark. I'm going to look at some of the ignition parts next.

Any other ideas? How do I know when it's the computer chip that's bad?

It turned out to be the ignition module ($35). Hopefully, nothing else will go wrong for a long time.
