Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

I recently installed 4 KYB GR2 shocks in my '97 accord. After install they have been making a very annoying bump/bang everytime I hit even the smallest bump. They are not loose... What the F@#$ could this be??? Anyone have the same issue????

Hi Kwazywabbit,
It's SHOCKING and interesting because mine Accord 98 156k km have same simptoms with stock shocks and other stuff...
And I have a plan change shocks to KYB !!!! Because one mechanic said so and I have uncomfortable rough ride, and noises as yours.
Honda dealer and Speedy shop didn't found anything bad !!!??? But problem increasing avery week...
What on Hayness manual:

74 Abnormal noise at the front end
1. Lack of lublication at balljoints and tie rod ends
2. Damaged shock absorber mount
3. Worn control arm bushings or tie rod ends
4. Loose stabilizer bar
5. Loose wheel nuts (I like this most!)
6. Loose suspension bolts

And nothing about shock absorber itself!
I think you need spend some additional time under the car.
Sorry for question, is KYB installed new?

All the best, LX-biker.

Front? Rear? Left? Right? Where does the sound come from?

The bump/bang sounds like a possible loose or bad upper mount. IMHO.

I've installed the KYB GR2's on my '93 Maxima. They are much stiffer than stock, since they are gas struts. Flattened out the car's ride well.

Hope this helps some. Good luck!

Re: Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

in my experience, anytime I got the thunk (especially dropping off things like bridgegaps), it was the strut tower bushing plate. It would 'seperate' as the suspension unloaded then the car would drop down onto it.

Re: Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

is the car dropped? Rumor has it that the GR2s are just like OEM shocks but cheaper... i think... so they dont really go well with dropped cars but with stock height they are superb. Rumor has it tho so dont take me word for it.

Re: Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

man this site is cool, there is comfort in numbers. Cause boy i tell ya, my accord does it too, drives me crazy. I was so miffed to spend 800 bucks for new KYB's, myself. Only to find the thunk noise still persists. DJ Brady, you say it sounds like the tower bushing plate, will a new one make a difference, or is this just a weak link?? My 91 accord wagon has been doin it for ages, and i seem to live in a world of uncaring mechanics who can't seem to really fix problems even when i practically give em a blank check.

Re: Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

I replaced mine in my 88 Accord LXi back when I had it, it fixed it for about a year then came back.. I think it's just a weak link (much like the front rotors, which I replaced with cross drilled after the 3rd set in 4 months, no more warped rotors after that)

Re: Shock Noise / Bump !!!!

bump sounds are usually caused by either bump stops that were not cut back enough, or, in some cases, caused by loose bolts at the strut tower. Oh, and on my 92 Accord, it also made slight creeking and thudding noises for the first 3,000 miles or so on my new suspension, then after tightening the bolts and stuff religiously (it usually was tight, ocassionally it could be a little tighter).....it went away.
