EGR Flow Excess on 1996 Sable

Car has about 100K mile on it. What should I do first:
1. Check vacuum in system?
2. Replace EGR?

Any ideas?

Try these steps (not neccesarily in this order). Note that EGR Flow Excess can mean a lot of things.

1. Check the EGR unit first. Does it hold vacuum? If it leaks then replace that unit.

2. Check for vacuum leaks at intake manifold. This can be done easily by spraying carb cleaner around intake manifold and vacuum lines. (Ford's are notorious for vacuum leaks at the intake manifold)

3. Check for loose hoses at the DPFE sensor. This sensor looks like a rectangular silver (if original aluminum) box below the Throttle unit near the rear exhaust maniforld.

4. Also check the EGR solenoid. Is the resistance reading ok? If not, replace that unit.

5. Check the MAF sensor. You'll need to remove it (CAREFULLY) and check the filaments. If they are dirty, spray them with carb cleaner to remove any crap. DO NOT touch the filaments.

6. Check the IAC sensor. Check for proper resistance. If not ok replace that unit.

Also make sure that all sensors are getting a proper voltage signal from the EEC before replacing them.

Good luck! EGR codes are difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.

Thanks for the info worked through to DPFE sensor and found it was slow to come down from peak voltage to base of 0.6v replaced with a new one and the code has not returned.
