Insurance question

Hi, i'm new here and i am really interested in getting a trans am. Only problem is the cost of insurance.(I'm 18) I was wondering about how much am I looking at in a monthly basis. Also I heard that I could maybe get a lower rate if I put my dad as the primary owner, Is this true? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

well I'm 19 and I just bought a firebird. a v6 auto. it's about 180 a month for full coverage. I have a really bad driving record though. I would say for a T/A you would most likely pay more than what I do.

lucky you... 19, bad record and 180 for full coverage.
im at about 250 a month for liabilty-under insured and uninsured and i dont even have a modern muscle car. I want a 96 firebird v6 so bad but im gettin killed on this insurance, i shoudl wait a while. I know that not having credit was better than having bad credit and i would have thought it'd be the same for auto insurance. but any insurance company would tell you it all depends on where you live. best advice i can offer is call for quotes, but dont trust progressive too much. at first they told me 795 for 6 months for the 96 firebird. then i called back to confirm because it really was too good too be true, and then they told me 1131, i called them back to get insurance when i was at the dealership before i bought it and they told me 2400 for 6 months. i decided on geico for my dads truck which is where im at 1450. (progressive wanted 2200 for the same vehicle.) best advice SHOP AROUND!!!!! (15 min could really save you 15 percent or more, although its more like 15 min or more could save you 15 percent.)

P.S. you probably could get it a little bit cheaper but there lies a problem. if the vehicle is in his name and you get in an accident, god forbid, and total that beauty, your dad woudl get the check and it woudl be up to him on if you get it or not. but if you go under his insurance company and drive his vehicle(s) *not suggested plural* you could get cheaper but i just have my own policy, and if the car is in his name but the insurance in your's they would need his info... (dl #) b/c he has financial interest in the vehicle. but if somethign happened i am led to believe i woudl get the money which i woudl then in turn hand over to him.

I totally understand how you want this vehicle and how cool it must be to drive to school/work in it at such a young age, but i wouldnt suggest it. believe me i totally understand, my attainable dream's a firebird, its just not acquireably worth it in my eyes... best of luck and hope i helped.

P.S. Best if you get a POS older trans possibly from the 80's.

Insurance lessons learned

Actually when Geico found out I had an 18 year old with a drivers license living in my household, although he never drove my vehicle they wanted to raise my insurance to 1500+. I went elsewhere and never disclosed his existence since that was a rip off. Even then the agent pointed out that if he ever got in an accident or a ticket in any car it's likely my new company would find out about it and raise my rates to the same extent unless he got separate insurance in his own name. That quote was for urban connecticut.

In short to protect your dad's rate for him you need to get your own insurance otherwise his insurance will go up to at least your quote level. And definitely shop around.

What I suggest is get a clunker for a while and put minimum insurance on it and build a good driving record to reduce your rates. Or if you want a good vehicle with good coverage be prepared to pay.

Re: Insurance question

$210 a month for me If i got a V6 Camaro. I'd imagine it'd be the same on a V6 Firebird. That's on full coverage. Just call insurance companies in your area and ask them for their rates.

I pay $807 every 6 months for the state minimum liability through statefarm. I'm 21 with 1 at fault accident (I totalled a car) and 1 speeding ticket.
