5.0 full throttle smell and smoke.

Any ideas/suggestions for an aggrievating problem I have with my '90 LX 5.0 5-speed? Full bore off the line is strong and fine right through the gears but when, for example I'm merging on the highway and punch it in 2nd or third I notice a little bit of blackish/dusty smoke (rich?) and a strong smell similar to gunpowder which drives me nuts. If I give it gas slowly vs. punching it the problem doesn't seem quite as bad. I've done the usual low buck mods to the car over the last 8 years such as, K&N, shorty headers, BBK off road H-pipe, Flowmasters, lowered, Ford Motorsports clutch, wires etc. and it's still a street screamer aside from this annoyance. I've replaced the throttle postion sensor along with new O2 sensors and a new EGR valve which seemed to help a little but it still seems to me as though something is calling for a quick rich condition under load. I've messed with cars since I was 15 and now at 63 years young I still light 'em up at each and every opportunity.

I love the smell of gunpowder but not when I'm ripping through the gears so come up with some suggestions, OK.

Thanks

Try pulling codes, see if maybe a sensor or something is on its way out.

Thats the way I want to be when I'm his age.
Try to pull codes like hiflow said. You can go to part stores to get this done.

Flash!

I am pretty sure it's

Key On, Key Off, Key On, Key Off, Key On.....

Should flash code 12...... Light On, Light Off, Light On Light On to start then codes will appear and eg : On On(2) off On On On(3) code 23, and will finish with a code 55, flash 5 times, off then flash 5 more times.

Good Luck.

12 - Code Start/ 55 - Finish

Mr.Rob
I don't know where you came up with that???

Use this picture here for reference.

Run a jumper wire like shown. Turn the car on, but do not start. You can either use a multi-meter like shown or use the cars check engine light on the dash. Codes will start with an 11, and end with an 11. Once you have established trouble codes for KOEO and fixed, you run codes for KOER or engine running using the same method.
