96 Cherokee - CV Joint????

Hey everyone-

I've got a 96 Cherokee which has 98k on it, been running great since i bought it a year and 20k ago; recently started making some noises on the undercarriage when i turn. Kind of a clicking/squeaking noise is the best way i could put it. Looking underneath i noticed near the right wheel/shock is a black thick residue like gunk which the left side does NOT have. No idea what i'm talking about, a friend told me sounded like a possible cv joint problem. Any help/info much appreciated!
