Oversimplifying things -- there are two components of the turbocharger, the exhaust side and the compressor side.

On the exhaust side there is the housing and wheel. Wheel sizes from smallest to largest -- TD05, TD05H, and TD06.

On the compressor side there is the housing and compressor wheel. Wheel sizes from smallest to largest -- 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. The letter suffix is the trim of the wheel, which is the balance between quick spool versus the ability to compress air over 15 psi. Trims from quick spool/boost below 10 psi to slow spool/boost above 20 psi -- -a, -b, -c, and -g.

Our cars came equipped with Mitsubishi turbos from the factory. So did most Chryslers, a few Saabs and Volvos, and the GMC Cyclone/Typhoon.

Other makes of cars came equipped with Garrett turbos. These include most Porsches and Nissans.

Examples of Mitsubishi Model Numbers
TD05-12A-8CM2 (Starion)
exhaust (aka turbine) housing: TD05-8CM2
exhaust (aka turbine) wheel: TD05
compressor wheel: -12A

TD05H-14G-8CM2 (Starion)
exhaust (aka turbine) housing: TD05H-8CM2
exhaust (aka turbine) wheel: TD05H
compressor wheel: -14G

TD05H-14B-6CM2 (Eclipse, Talon, Laser)
exhaust (aka turbine) housing: TD05H-6CM2
exhaust (aka turbine) wheel: TD05H
compressor wheel: -14B

It is common practice for turbo rebuilders to port the compressor housings to make room for larger compressor wheels.

Examples of Garrett exhaust (aka turbine) housings and wheels:
T25, T3, T4,

It is common practice for turbo rebuilers to use another manufacturer's housing and install with Garrett flange.

Examples of Garrett compressor wheels:
Super 60, T61, T88
