Question van will not start

1 week ago I purchased a 1992 ram 250 mark 3 conversion van w/t a 318. It has 54,000 miles on it and ran great for a week. Two days ago my wife went out and started it and forgot somthing in the house shut it off and it would not restart. About twenty min. later it started I drove it about three miles and it cut off. Twenty min. later it started again drove about 2 miles and it shut down again. Finally got it home and It has not started since. I started checking things and found out it has NO power to the coil I checked all the relays I could find with no luck. i checked the ERG,vacum lines, crank and cam sensors with no luck. It did not ever throw a check engine light it has no stored codes the batery is brand new I tried every thing I could think of. can anyone tell me what would cause it not to have any spark. I would think if the crank or cam sensor went bad it would give you a check engine light. I am not great with electrical systems so if someone has a clue to my problem please help. I still owe money on this thing

Re: van will not start

im not sure about vans but a crank sensor will give a code 12 ...this is normal during code retrival...so you cant tell if the crank sensor is bad or not with out going deeper ...also check all fuse for ign and fuel ...did you check out the auto shut down relay

Re: van will not start

Code 12 means that the battery was recently disconnected. He didn't even mention any codes anyways.

No power TO the coil or AFTER the coil? Maybe the coil is shot.

Re: van will not start

a '92 318 van?

Bad distributor pickup?
Bad coil?
Bad SMEC (computer, or ECM whatever-you-wanna-call-it)
Bad Ignition fuse link?

Bad Van? (just kidding)

Re: van will not start

Sounds like a case where someone knew something was wrong, so they patched the problem quick and dumped it/traded it.

When something breaks 1 week after a purchase, you can usually say pretty surely that the vehicle was beaten and/or neglected maintenance...

I have a 94/ 2500 318/5.2 convertion van and at one time after shutting it off and later restarting the engine it would only crank.Turned out to be the crank sensor located on top of the bell housing towards the passanger side. no spark at plugs/coil. hope it helps.

Re: van will not start

i have the same problem

i swapped my crank sensor with a working van and the working van worked with my non working crank sensor so that rules out the crank sensor

i also swapped the coil and complete distributor

i cant figure out why i have no spark

if any1 can help me please advise

Re: van will not start

You may have a bad PCM. Located above the engine on the firewall inside the engine compartment.
