Question 1999 4runner reset check engine light?

First off I would like the thank the readers (and repliers) on the 4runner forum who saved me a ton of money by suggesting the P0171 code was the AFM rather than something else. Found a good used unit on usedpartsfinder.com for $40 delivered! It was $573 from the dealer. Fixed the hesitation problem completely. My problem is that the check engine light is still on and I'm not sure how to reset it. On my old 4runner it was pull the EFI fuse for 15 seconds but there is no EFI fuse on the '99. I found 2 ECU fuses but I'm not sure anything good will come of trying those without asking around first...Any suggestions?

Also...where would one get a tool that holds the pulleys on the crankshaft while removing the mail bolt? There is not enough clearance for the impact gun and I'd rather use the hand tools on that anyway. Thanks in advance!! TT

To remove the crankshaft bolt, try wedging a large screwdriver in the flywhee/driveplate ring gear teeth or against a torque converter bolt.

Pull the positive battery terminal to cancel the CEL.

Air Flow Meter. It is near the air cleaner box in the air inlet.

Re: 1999 4runner reset check engine light?

P0171 code could be
Air Induction System
Injector blockage
MAF meter
Engine coolant temperature sensor
Fuel pressure low
Gas leakage from exhaust system
Open circuit or short in HO2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) - in front of cat. converter.
Bad HO2 Sensor (bank 1 sensor 1)

Hi Tufftommy, I don't think you can reset by any fuse on 99 model but I know that you can reset it by unplugging your battery.

Question for everyone:-) I also have a 99 model and recently the check engine light came on but I haven't took it anywhere to check the code. This happened during a trip to Reno but the check engine light have came on few times before but now it's always on. I noticed the car have lost some power and there's some hesitation. I wonder if this could be the same problem Tufftommy had. I currently have around 97K miles. Any lead/suggestion is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Golfer

Re: 1999 4runner reset check engine light?

I also have a 99 4runner and the check engine light just came on today about a half hour ago so super! I checked..my engine is still there I had just put injector cleaner in it today, sooo I am guessing it is probably that. I have 87,000 miles on the beast. No other problems though.

Go to an auto parts store with the service and get the codes downloaded from your computer. You never know, and it's free.
