wheel speed sensor

Our 2001 Grand Am ABS, Trac OFF and Service Engine lights all come on about a minute after the car is started and driven. Until that time the ABS is working improperly, with the front right wheel ABS activated regardless of road surface. The dealer service manager says it is a bad wheel speed sensor. It is a single unit with parts and installation amounting to $500.00. Can this sensor simply be deactivated or is there some other solution? I can live without ABS, but I don't like the fact that it is functioning improperly.
