93 Sunbird hard starting

Got a 93 sunbird 2.0 litre that I just picked up cheap for my daughter. Its very hard to start and you have to pump the pedal to get it to go...it just turns over and over and finally starts...why is it so hard to start?? Is this a fuel pump problem or something else? And I think the rad fan is not coming on too...what would that be? Anything else on these cars that I should check or look into...like other problems they have? Im just going to get used parts from the bone yard, to give her a first set of wheels. As long as it runs and is safe is my concern. I only paid $300.00 bucks for this banger...but it runs...just hard to start...once its running seems fine. How to check the old head gasket deal on this toy. Any and all advice appreciated. thanks

Re: 93 Sunbird hard starting

I would check the fuel pressure regulator to make sure you are getting proper fuel pressure. If the fuel pressure is low at start up then it will be hard to start. Also check the throttle position sensor, it could be going bad. If you just bought the car you may want to change plugs and wires.

thanks for the tip. I'm having more problems now i cant get it to start at all. i think it might be the fuel pump or pressure regulator cause it seems if i pump the gas pedal a lot it almost starts to go but it only seams to fire on one cylinder but cant get running. when i can get it running (just for a min or two) when i first start it, it runs real rich, and runs real lumpy. how can i check if its the pressure regulator or fuel pump? do i have to take it in or is it something i can check my self?

Re: 93 Sunbird hard starting

I am having the same problem, but worse. My car now backfires on trying to start it. I broke 2 starter motor housings already. It's the timing belt. It seems to have jumped a few cogs and the engine trying to start turned against the starter and snap, broken starter housing. Check that. I am looking for someone who can tell me how the gears are supposed to line up to put the belt back on properly and get the damn thing started.
