what are the torque specs on the engine supposed to be?

i'm assuming on a 7mgte?
i torque mine down to about 75-85ft pounds i reckon any more than that you will just crush the head gasket and don't forget 1000km later to retorque it

yeah w/ a 7M you want about 80-85 ft/lbs, and I would retorque almost everyday for at least 3-4 days. Why I say this is because aluminum heads have the tendancy to shake things loose. and an uneven un-torquing might cause the head gasket to fail. when I replaced my cylinder head, I torqued it to spec, the next day it had lost 15 ft/lbs!

Stock head bolts should be torqued to 72ftlbs, ARP studs or bolts should be 85ftlbs.

In all truthfullness, it really doesn't have to be *exact* spec...retarded Haynes manual has my head bolt torque spec at 52 ft/lbs! Guess where I have mine at? 75! LOL As long as ALL the head bolts are torqued to the desired amount, it will be fine. No need to go crazy however! 85 ft/lbs should be the max on stockers! I used 85 on my last cylinder head and it was fine, I still have the head and it is not warped

You shouldn't be worried about warping the head from over-torqueing, you should be worried about streatching and snapping the bolts. Anything past 72ftlbs puts the stock bolts into the plastic region where they lose their origional stiffness. I would most definetly try my best to be exact on anything involving the basic mechanics of the engine, getting "in the area" can be the difference between getting BHG or not, even with a MHG, and ruining all the work recently put into rebuilding it. True about the Haynes manual's though, I don't trust those things as far as I can throw them, and that's not very far.

my buddy just recently blew the head gasket on his 391rwhp 7MGTE, the head bolts stretched and of course the head gasket blew. But of course, that's under 15psi of boost...
A high compression engine or one under boost really should be careful about stretching the bolts. Of course, any engine that sat for a long period of time w/ the original head bolts, would need to be under scrutiny as well. It's sad to say the Haynes/Chiltons manuals can do more harm than good w/ certain torque specs and even getting compression ratios wrong
