300zx Turbo Repair?

Ok i'm currently in the market for a 300zx. I have a list of NA's and a 3 twin turbo's. I was wanting the TT but i talked to a nissan mechanic today and he said that when the turbo goes out i will not be able to drive it. And it will cost $$ just to take it off.
My questions would be, What's a ballpark for this kinda work? How much would it cost to rebuild the twin turbo? Can i still drive if the turbo goes out, was he just saying i couldn't?
Is the only way to replace it with a new one, or is it cheaper to rebuild it?
Also I was reading some threads on the acceleration time of the 300zx. you guys said that it will be a BMW 325i which "does" mid to high 15's 1/4 mile and it will beat a 328i that supposedly does high 14s-low 15's.
The times sheet i have said 1990 300zx 2+2 will pull 15.5 the twin turbo will pull 14.1

Re: 300zx Turbo Repair?

The 1/4 times you have are about right...I've seen 0-60 times as low as 5.0 sec. They're very fast cars with very high potential. These things vary greatly. You have to think of what goes along with owning a supercar...supercar repair bills. The Z isn't as complicated as, say, a TT Supra, but it's not as simple as the Z31T, either. Some mechanics don't know how to work on them, so finding a good mechanic that won't screw stuff up isn't only very important, but it can also be difficult...let alone expensive. If you have the cash for maintenance, get the TT. If you don't get the N/A or consider one like mine. The 84-89 300ZX, also known as Z31s is wonderfully reliable and a blast to drive. The Z31T, like the Z32TT (90-96 300ZX), has decent power potential. For more info, read the Turbo FAQ on www.z31.com when they get their site back up. You have any other questions or anything else, let us know...you came to the right place.

Alright, first off, lets remember that while you can easily screw up a turbo engine by being stupid, these things are not made of glass. Stock turbos easily last 60k miles. The VG is a tough motor, most people just go insanely over board with boost without touching the rest of it.

So it comes down to what you want the car for. If its just going to be a daily driver then really I suggest you get a 240sx or something. NA Zs are nice to drive but I wouldn't want to drop that much cash on something thats just going to get me back and forth to work. (Thats why I bought a 240, that and I think they are sweeeeet ass rides).

So I got a 95 TT for my toy. If you want a fast car you have to have something else to drive while it is in the shop, being upgraded, or lying around dead because it got pushed too hard one night. And let us remember that the TT Z32 really is a budget supercar. Geared for 190 at redline (with only a 5 spd too) and stock with a easy to upgrade twin turbo set, the 300Z is almost unmatched in terms of value. That and the girls damn near wet their panties every time they see one, an added bonus not to be overlooked

However, the Z31Ts offer wicked performance as well and are more of a sleeper as its styling is somewhat...generic...compared to the "what the hell was that? a ferrari?" styling of the Z32. Considering how cheap you can find Z31s, they make excellent buys, at the cost of power potential and a few other things (namely the girls).

As far as NAs go...I don't go there because I know that if I had bought a NA I would want a turbo inside a month. If its a car to have fun with, don't buy anything thats not exactly what you want.

as a daily driver and not haveing the funds to back it up i would definitely not get the TT. i heard that they a pain to work on and they can be rather costly. i am pretty sure that u can still drive a TT with the turbo's out. i probably wouldnt recommend it but i have talked to a couple people thet still drive there z with blown turbos. of course they r saving for an upgrade.
it comes down to what u want and the funds u got.
i have an N/A Z32 and it is defintely quick enough to take most cars on the road. dont underestimate it either. with the appropriate funds it can be built into a beast. any z u get. dont beat on it like u would a honda with a 10 year warantee.

You right about that, NA Z32s are hardly slow. But really if you want to go fast its easier to buy a TT. Even if you spend big money on a NA, a TT with moderate upgrades is going to be faster.

And really in my mind, anyone who drives on blown turbos (depends on what "blown" actually means in the given situation, if its damaged fins, excessive shaft play, blown gaskets...) is probably not going to be upgrading anything. Especially not given the huge labor cost of pulling the VGTT out of the car. But thats just me and I'm not really big on "other people".

And you are damn right a TT is not a daily driver, screw putting a bunch of miles on my new engine, having people hit it parking lots or it getting stolen. I don't even really think a NA is a daily driver. I know mine is for the weekends and the occasional "NAH NAH NAH NA NAH NAH I GOT A Z!" ego boosting trip to work
