cx or dx?

How do I know what kind of civic I have? Is it a DX or CX?

My VIN is 2HGEH2447SH______

I know its 1.5L 4 Cylin.

What's the difference between a DX and a CX?

Can I improve the engine at all?

I'm a complete car newb. Thanks guys.

Re: cx or dx?

CX. It should say 8 valve on the valve cover. The DX has 106hp and the CX has 70.

thats a pretty broad statement without knowing the car. i would say 96+ get the d16y8 but if 92-95 drop in the d16z6. unless you can tell the year by the vin in such case its the 10th number, which is S in his case. cant remember what S is though.

Not for someone who's new to cars man, the h22 would be a good recomendation for someone a little more experienced.

My car is a '94 and has R in the 10th place; so would it be accurate to say the S was probably a '95?

Re: cx or dx?

You sure about the second 4 in the VIN, according to Honda it should be a 5-9
2HG means it was made in Canada
EH2 means Civic 3 door/D15B7, D15B8, D15Z1 EH3 is the Si)
4 means four speed/ or auto
and then....
5:CX
6X
7:VX
8:Si
9:Si w/ABS
after that is a check digit, then number for the year, and then factory code and finally the serial number.

In my haynes manual it says 4: CX 5: DX 9:VX 8:Si But you're right my VIN (i have a CX) says 5.
So maybe I'm completely wrong in saying it is a CX... he should check the valve cover and engine code and let us know

Re: cx or dx?

What I posted is from the 1994 Civic Helms, so it is year specific, but that should only change the year code.

Well, since the profile of aeroheli says they have a 1995 civic, we know it's a fifth gen. That being said, an easy way to tell is to look at the engine code.

If it says D15B8, it's a CX...1.5 liter 4 cylinder 8 vavle 70hp motor.

If it says D15B7 it's a DX...1.5 liter 4 cylinder 16 valve 102hp motor with 91 ft-lb of torque.

That's probably the easiest way to tell which model it is, if you can't decifer the VIN number. Another way, if you call a dealer and read them the vin, they can tell you excatly what car it is...I've done this before to varify the claimed source of motors (e.g, year, 5 speed or auto, etc) for a swap.

honestly i wouldnt recommend an h22 civic to anyone that
a: doesnt race a lot
b: like themselves at all. gotta hate yourself for this
problem with this swap is the mounts you gotta use for this swap are gonna be so hard that making it a daily driver tends to really suck.

Re: cx or dx?

Oh yeah or you could just go to carfax.com and type in the full vin number and it will tell you what model you have; you'll only have to pay if you get the whole history of the car.

Re: cx or dx?

i'd go with the d16z6 and just build it up. it can make pretty decent power with a turbo if you wanna do that down the road. seeing how you're a self-proclaimed car newb a swap would be pushing it a bit (even though it is an easy swap). it depends on how much time and money you wanna put in. a b16a2 would be a good swap if you've got the money. it'd be fast and N/A, which is safer. how much money are you looking to invest?
