I blew a head gasket not to long ago and had a Y8 head laying around so I decided to go ahead and put it on. Well I couldn't tell to much difference with the y8 head than the A6. Looked at the cam gear and it was at +2 degrees. Somone told me to retard it -4 degrees. It fixed the idle problem but it feels like it misses a little climbing through the RPM's and feels bogged down. (will advance it to -2 later)
Anyways. I also wired the vtec up while I was at it. I can't feel any difference when vtec is activated besides the fact that I can climb higher in the RPM's. Without it it would stop at 6k now it will go past that. I guess the SOHC vtec isn't to much of a power gain.....are they more for fuel eco.? Also what is the proper advance/retard degrees I need to set my cam gear at.

Re: vtec...what's all the hype?
as a general rule, on a SOHC engine, retarding the cam gear will gain horsepower up top. advancing the cam gear will gain power on the low end.
You should've felt a pretty nice horsepower gain withthe y8 head. Higher compression, larger valves, ALOT larger cam.. you just went from a 108hp engine to about a 130-135hp engine (higher compression than a stock d16y8) Just a quick question... when you adjusted your cam gear, did you remember to check and reset your ignition (distributor) timing? |

Crap, no...I didn't know I had to do that. What do I do to do that?

what you talkin about boy? to set ignition timing on the dizzy, you loosen all of the bolts on the distributer, and rotate it until it is in correct time |

Re: vtec...what's all the hype?
I think there is some confusion here. To set the ignition timing you have to jump these 2 wires on a plug that is on the right side fender for 88-89 and I think its in the car somewhere on the 90-91, that puts the car into a special mode. Than you loosen the distributor bolts and use a timing light to set the timing looking at the crank pulley, than tighten them and pull out the jumper and you are good to go.
