Gear shifter removal

Please Help,
I have a 83 4x4 p/u and installing a new clutch. No problems getting transfer case shifter but cannot remove trans gear shifter. My manual says on some older models you will need a special tool . What is this tool? Where can I get one? The dealer says get it at local tool co. Can I improvise some way to get it out. I'm getiing really frustated& have tried everything. Please HELP. Thanks
Gary

solution

To remove the gear shift press down on the spring retainer and turn I believe it is clockwise. I didn't need no special tool. The whole shifter will come out. Do not need to remove housing.

Re: Gear shifter removal

i recently replaced my gearshifter on my 83' pickup and all i had 2 do is pull up the shifter boot and take the 4 screws out of the top plate that holds the shifter in place and it pops right out
