1991 Corolla problems starting

Hi,

My wife has a 1991 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon. It has had intermittent problems starting for the past year or so. The problem has become more and more frequent. It starts fine most of the time; however, occasionally it does nothing (no clicking). You turn the key and absolutely nothing happens. My first thought was it's a bad starter but could it be the ignition switch? Is there a way to verify that it is the starter? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

Why did you suspect the starter, then move on to the ignition switch? Always, always always, always check your fuses first. If its the starter, do you hear a clicking noise in the engine when you turn the key? If not, its a bad solenoid in the starter. You might be able to replace the solenoid, but sometiems the starter itself.

could be the alternator, if your cars off for awhile, like my corolla, the battery will die, and it wont start.

Evo, when you mention nothing happens do you mean no lights (power) as well while you try to start the ignition? First, Check battery itself and the connection make sure is tight, if the battery is not tight it will still give you power but if you try to start the car it won't be able to start just nothing happend including no lights anything, since it draw a big amp for it, but sometimes is ok, so please check the battery first. If the alternator is bad you won't be able to start at all since the battery is drain.
