My 95 Bonne Weirdness.

Hello, I'm new here, and this seems to be a great site.

Now for my little issue. I just bought a 1995 Bonneville (upgrading from a 1998 Bonneville), and it is doing some curious things:

When driving down the freeway (70-75MPH) the car will suddenly shift out of overdrive (and remain in Drive (third gear?)) until I pull over, turn off the car and restart it. It will then keep in over drive for another 5-7 miles, then kick out again.

Traction control light turns on after driving for 2-3 blocks.

The ABS seems a little weird. As you slow down and prepare to stop, at the last moment the ABS will kick in even if it does not need to.

This car has the electronic climate control and that seems to have a mind of its own… Some times it will blow cool air, other times very hot air. I am presuming that this may be vacuum related and probably an easy fix.

The cruise control works… Kind of. It will turn on and keep the speed, but it slowly looses speed until you turn it off, get the car back up to speed manually, then set it again. I think this uses the older style vacuum controlled cruise control, and not the electronic version my 98 Bonne had. Can I take the cruise control module off my old 98 Bonne and put it on this one?

This car has 185,000 miles on it and was apparently well maintained (mechanically anyways).

After searching the site I came across a common theme for those problems (OD, ABS Trac. Ctrl.): the wheel speed sensor. For some people it was a simple loose connection; for others it was a costly fix. Where are these sensors, and is there an easy way to test them?

I just had this same problem and fixed it by charging the refrigerent. I bought a can of R-134 and a charging kit at the zone. It had a guage and was real easy to do.

I have the same problem with the traction control. I have been driving with it for several years with no problem but would like to fix that problem as well.

The abs light/odd abs function is either a loose connection at a hub bearing or the hub bearing itself. The abs sensor is part of the hub bearing, and is not serviceable by itself. If your car has climate control air, if it's not low refrigerant, I would say both that and your cruise problem could be vacuum related, check the vacuum hoses coming off the throttle body/ manifold for cracks or leaks.

These seem to be plagued with electrical problems which are caused by a water leaks which corrodes the main harness into the cab over time. Check your bulk head connector for corrosion.
