94 Sable Tranny Question

My Sable appears to run fine for the first half hour or so until I pull up to a signal. When I start up from a stop, the motor revs up but the car goes nowhere for a moment or so. It's as if the tranny is slipping which it probably is. The car runs ok until I have to stop and then start up again when the tranny slips again.

I have also noticed that my temperature gauge is erratic. The gague goes from cold to about half way at which time I expect the thermostat to open and the temp reading to go down. Once again, after driving for a period of time, the gauge will start going between the halfway mark and just below the Hot line and then come back down and then continue to fluctuate between the one third area and just below the hot area.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

A slipping trans will generate a lot of extra heat; and the ATF goes through a small cooler AND another cooler located in the radiator, at least on my '87 Taurus. That may be part of your high guage temp. readings. At least that's where I'd start - with getting the trans serviced. Might just be a sticking valve in the valve body of the trans.

dude. i would start with a thermostat, leak check, and fluid levels. god don't burn a forest to find a tree.

I solved my heat problem by replacing my radiator and doing an extensive flushing of the cooling system.

My trany problem is quite similar to that which was posted by 83-944, except that my problem starts when the car is in "D". When my son stops at a signal, he holds the brake down and taps the gas until the car starts forward. When I drive the car, I find that if I use the second "D" the car drives okay, but at idle, the oil light flashes intermittently. If I park the car for a while, when I start it up, I can not move the car until I put it in "R" and peck on the gas until I feel the jerk and then I am good to go using the second "D" again.

In the other problem stated by 83-944, the valve body was mentioned. Where exactly is it located and can I replace it myself?

Re: 94 Sable Tranny Question

ok, the guy before me is a fin spammer. get a life dude. \

anyway to answer your question, i am not sure if i am completely correct but i beleive the valve body is inside the transmission of an automatic. unless for some reason this guy is talking about a cam valve inside the top of the engine, but i dobt it because i traced my 1st to 2nd shifting problem to a piston inside the transmission. similarly named the body.

I have had the same trans problem. It is not slipping, it is usally a cloged and or bad valve. Try starting with a filter and fluid flush.
