Question clutch problems

With the engine off, I can select different gears, but when I start the motor in nuetral I can't get any gears. If I start the car in 1st gear, the car will run, but I can't get it out of gear or change gears til the motor is off again. Basically I did a motor&tranny swap myself and need to know if Im gonna have to replace the new clutch again or adjust the clutch. If its an adjustin' it needs, I need to know what kind. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

your clutch isn't releasing from the flywheel when you push in the clutch. you may possibly have a bad throw out bearing. soon the car will start to not "stop" when you push in the clutch and will stall when you apply your brakes just as if you hadn't depressed the clutch.

you say you have a new clutch? what about throw out bearing? anyway try adjusting it.

by the way what type of car is it? is it cable or hydro tranny?
