98 metro tranny swaps and smoking engine

1st: Will the 5 speed trans from an earlier metro, such as a '92 work in my 5 spd '98 Metro (3 cyl 1.0)? I also have an automatic tranny from a '93 if that would work instead...

2nd: I recently replaced the valves (burned) on my Metro, my cylinders looked ok but after reassebly the thing still smokes (bluish-white) under acceleration and at idle... any clues. oh, the engine code does say the egr is having a problem and there was oil in one of the passages on the intake runner assembly (not the runner itself) where it mates up to the head, I assumed it was some kind of emissions b.s. and cleaned it out before reassembly. There was also oil in the air breather.

either valve guides, valve seals, or piston rings. Most likely piston rings if it's got over 100k

engine does have about 93k miles, replaced valve seals already engine idles and runs great but the smoke worries me... I did look at the cylinder bores while I had the head off, they looked good no noticeable ring groove at the top of the walls or scoring in the cylinder but I didn't mic' em so I guess I'll check that out a little better, when I break it down for a rebuild.

just went thru this with a 96 1.0,do a compression test..mine was 100,108,102 with engine not running,finally did it again today..but squarted some oil after each and redid them and jumped to 25lbs each extra compression,sure sign rering do,if no change valves..sad isn't it?

100PSI? WOW, that's barely enough to burn the gas, heh. My swift engine cranks out about 215psi stock.
