synthetic fluids

we just purchased a 95 formula firebird LT!. we want to keep it running good and strong for a long time. any opinions on oil types (pros and cons of synthetics vs. regular oils, brands), fuels (hi-test?, additives-how often), tranny fluids etc. it currently has 76,000 miles and runs good, oil pressure seems a little low to me though, around 40 til it warms up good then drops to about 20 at idle.

I remember an episode of Hot Rod TV where they replaced all fluids with Royal Purple synthetic fluids and gained 8HP on the dyno.

royal purple is a good lubricant! If not that mobil1 synthetic!

yup. i run royal purple 10W-30. honestly i have seen numerouse dynos that have proven that you get more power, like he said only like 7-10HP usualy. its not enough of a gain to notice the power differnce really, but what i did notice when i switched was that my engine seems to rev up a little easier and a little faster. not alot by any means, but when you know your car well enough you can just kinda tell some things like that. now as for the dyno stuff, all the times i have seen someone dyno a switch from regualr to synthetic, they usualy chanve the viscosity(spelling) of the oil too. for instance i saw one that was using 10W-30 regualr oil and they switched to 5W-20 or whatever the hell that one is. so that might make a little bit of differnce too.l

I'm of the old school belief that if you should keep the lube that your car has spent most of its life with. I use Castrol Syntec, which I run after my factory oil gets changed. I would use a synthetic blend, which will be more than adequate for anything you will do with that engine.

i dont really want to start a debate over this because there has been a number of them already. but, dont make that statement and then end it with something that is not true. you can by all means switch back to conventional oil after running synthetic. the only people who say you cant are people who dont truly understand what synthetic oil is. when people actualy know what it is then they know you can switch all you want.

like you 68chevelle. synthetic oil has a heavier mineral base,meaning your engine becomes well lubricated.the internals become dependant on the heavier base.switching back to a thinner oil base,now the eng works harder,can cause piston rings to leak or in rare cases crank vibration.peple who claim switching to a weaker oil don't understand a eng may not be able to handle the degradation.maybe you should have researched synthetic oil a little better!

lol. wow your funny. so your saying top oil companys dont know what there talking about. humm, i wonder who is more believeable, you are some of the top oil manufacturers. by the way, what do you think oil is made from, mineral oil. the diffrerence is that conventional oils are less uniform in size and there for can have a "weeker link". synthetic oils are more uniform and made to be more consistent and therfore more stable. also, if you cant use conventional and synthetic oils together then why do they have sutch things as oils that are part synthetic. im curiouse as for you to state come actual fact and give me a reputable source that says once you use synthetic oil you cant switch back. if you would like i will give you a soures,(a top oil manufactuer), that says spacificaly that you can. now i have done resaerch and do know what im talking about. there are people on there that can basicaly use words and you wont know what they are saying because you cant understand then and explane things the way they are, maybe you should do a search and fid some of the threads that deal with this topic and see what they say. but like i said, give me a reputable source. if you do not then i will just asume you cant find one and goes along with what your trying to say. im sure you could but like i said, reputable, not some home made source by someone like you who thinks they know.

oh by the way, most the time people only have a problem leaking oil when they switch to synthetic, not from. synthetic oil is more prone to leaking, your kind backwads there.
