Not starting

1992 V8 won't start. We hear a clicking noise when trying to start. It does start with a jump, but after sitting won't start again. Ignition feels loose and doesn't always line up with the key. Battery held a charge while running, but lost it overnight. We suspect the starter or the ignition switch. Any thoughts?

Re: Not starting

As far as the key being loose, the lock cylinder on '89-94's is prone to twist apart. It's fairly cheap to replace, but you loose the original ignition and door keys be alike. A locksmith can fix that for you, but it's not really that inconvenient.

Maybe your battery is just shot. with the motor running, disconnect the positive terminal of the battery. If it stays running, then your vehicle electrical system, including the alternator, is ok.

Specifics:
battery voltage should maintain 12.3 VDC with a load (like with the headlights on)for more than a minute.

When the motor is running, the voltage at idle on the battery should be at least 13.8 VDC (usually, it will be around 14.2-14.5 VDC.)
If you don't have the 13.8 (at least) or the truck dies as soon as you disconnect the battery, then your alternator is bad.

Please don't buy a cheap crappy battery. I would suggest a minimum 850 CCA @ 32 degrees F.
