oil drain plug/bolt rounded off

help i rounded off my oil drain plug bolt i tried vise grips sears damaged bolt removeal tool tapping it with ball ping hammer (to loosen) it is very bad condition and am considering drilling it out or arc welding a new bolt to it- it is still in pan on vehicle that wife drives daily '02 windstar. why is this bolt sooo tight? any advice will be greatly apppreaciated!!

Jiffy Lube strikes again. Check at Sears, they have some new bolt removal tools that might work on a rounded bolt, not sure with the amount of torque you're talking about.

I have had great success with a CAREFUL application of a chisel and hammer on the lip of the bolt. Small nicks in the pan are not a problem, but you still need to use caution. So far, it has worked 100%.

Are you sure you're turning it the right direction?When you're lying on your back and working on changing the oil you need to turn the bolt the oppisite way you'd think.It's because you're looking at the thing from the back side,instead of straight on.

You can use a large plumbers pipe wrench. Be sure a replacement plug is available and use antisieze compound when you put it back in.

As with a previous post, Sears has a bolt removal tool that works very well for about 20 bucks. (kit comes with variable sizes) Just make sure that you have your replacement bolt purchased first because the tool will destroy the old one.
