just got 99 need to know some stuff!!!

i just bought a 99 jetta with a lil over 100k on it... its only been about 4 days, and its been running fine. id really like to know what the most common problems are with the '99s so i know what to look out for. also, everyone is talking about 2.0, 1.8t, and the other one (lol, cant remember it) andi have no clue what mine is. it has great acceleration(as far as i know) and it drives smooth.. is there any way to know if its a 2.0 or what??? tahnks for any help!!

I have a '99 (New Jetta) also that I bought a little over a year ago from a friend. I have 94k on it now. She didn't have many issues with it when she had it. The power window mechanisms are bad and the windows broke twice for her. Happened a third time after I bought it. I was over the warranty miles but the dealer put in two new front window mechanisms for free. The brakes/rotors wore down very fast even though it was highway driven. I got it with 68k and I had to replace all 4 rotors/pads. Has your timing belt been done yet? I took mine in for brakes a few months ago and my mechanic saw that my water pump was leaking. The pump is timing belt driven so if the pump goes, your belt goes. Luckily he saw it so I had all that done. It was due anyway. Goes through oil quicker than any other car I've had so make sure you check the oil every 1000 miles or so. Transmission has been quirky since day one. Jerks into gear at low speeds sometimes. Alarm goes off at random times with the doors open and the power locks are quirky. My cat. converter just died also. Drives nice, but I won't buy another VW in the future though. No one wants to work on them and the parts are expensive. Quirkiest car I've ever owned but it's paid for. Wish you the best with yours.

Eric

The timing belt and water pump should be changed every 60k or 5 years, if it hasn't been done then yes, get it changed.
