Re: Turbo Upgrade?

Let us know a few things first:

1. What is your power goal?
2. What kind of budget are you on?

And also, before you can upgrade the turbo, you need to do a few supporting mods first. However, depending on your power goals, the supporting mods will vary.

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

guitarX nailed it. you'l need all the supporting mod first for a new turbo upgrade. it needs to breath well first to be able to utilize the turbo. ie. intake, exaust (3" the best). you're best bet'll prob be a small 16G or big.

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

Well, since you said you want it for a street/strip car, then I'd think either the evoIII big 16g or an 18g. You could go with a 20g, but that's a bit big for a streetcar, and you'd need a good bit of supporting mods.

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

YES!!!.. definitely. more air means more fuel too. or it won't run right. fuel management upgrade will be your supporting mod for that bigger turbo too.

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

correct me if i am wrong, i think T3 is a much bigger turbo than you need. generally speeking a EVo big 16G would be the best choice for most people's need ie. everyday driving and street racing.

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

i found a kit with a T3/T4 turbo for a little less than 2G. it has an external wastegate? I know a dump tube goes to the wastegate, but does it hook up to the exaust? if so then where

Re: Turbo Upgrade?

the dumptube goes back to the intake pipe while external WG hooks up to your turbo. your turbo is connected in between your exaust manifold and downpipe

'About 400hp' is 20g or t3/t4 zone. About the limit for streetability for most people. Somewhat unrealistic unless you already know what you are doing, but since you quoted a turbo kit you were looking at for $2,000 I will assume you wish to spend some money on your car.

There are a lot of options for you. Going for anything over 16g level power will start costing you in supporting mods. EVO3 16g's can make 325-375hp depending on a few things. What do you really want by upgrading? You can never make a decision unless you say what 1/4 mile time or horsepower you want, and then again, who knows exactly what they want in horsepower without knowing what it's like?

I'd say get an EVO3 16g or 20g. If you need MORE than 375hp, there are still options for you, but then I suspect you just want info (easily found by searching) and are not really going to do it.

Injectors and a pump. Maybe a FPR depending on the pump. Fuel rail is not a common upgrade for a DSM.

Negative. For one, HKS is expensive, and mostly because it's uncommon and not proven (read: probably not fast compared to a regular T28). T28's are around 16g level, but are more expensive.

T3 means the exhaust side when said as 'T3/T4' or 'T3/T28'. Stock exhaust manifold bolts up to a T3, which means the stock turbo is one (i think... it may just mean it FITS one). Turbos with T3 compressors aren't that big. There are some BIG turbos with T3 exhaust sides though. So T3 exhaust side doesn't indicate power level.

Depends what kit. Some external wastegates bolt onto the exhaust manifold, some onto the o2 housing. The situation you mention is the o2 housing (attached to the exhaust side of the turbo) having a pipe to the external wastegate. Then, the exhaust can be either routed into the downpipe (or o2 housing again), OR dumped into the air. This is what i'm talking about:

Stolen from www.racingknowledgeonline.org It belongs to Nichols.
