Help the New Guy!

I just got a '98 Ranger and want to make some engine modifications. I have already installed Pioneer speakers and a Pioneer cd player. I've also put BF Goodrich All-Terain tires on, as well. However, I want to make some engine modifications. Does anybody have any suggestions on where I could go??

Modify your air box or purchase a new K&N air intake box & pipe. There are others, so depending on your $$ check out other items for this or fabricate them yourselve.
They are costly!!

AirRaid throttle spacer,
SP wires,
radiator and engine flush.
These are just a few simple things within a decent budget price range. There are more modified areas, that you could take, but the $$ goes UP!!

Keep in mind with the fuel additives, yes you might feel a slight difference, but with simple engines such as these, they could do more harm then good.

i hope you arent talking about the tornado intake clogging unit... that should not be used for anything more than cutting cookies. the goal of engine mods are to get the gasses in and out of the engine as quckly as possible. the tornado restricts the intake and slows the velocity of air into the motor...which common sense will tell you impacts torque in a negetive fashion. remember...gasses in and out of the motor as quickly as possible, mods to consider are: new air intake with k&n cone filter, larger or bored throttle body, header, larger diameter exhaust piping and less restrictive muffler among other things. these will allow you to actually gain something. but if you want to be as quick as me jaybird...i would consider trading in your truck for the v6 model and modding that .

If you have a 4 cylinder engine, you will find that there are not alot of parts available for this engine. The best performance upgrade is a chip. Catback exhaust does help but doesn't give much of a HP increase. The airbox mod just adds alot of noise and very little seat of the pants feel. The tornado, wires, flushing the radiator, throttle body spacer, etc. are a waste of time for the money you invest. Alot of people will disagree with me but if you ever had your vehicle on a dyno and performed each modification and rechecked the HP increase, you will find that your $$'s per mod was virtually a waste of time, except for a chip and nitrous. Don't believe all of the manufacturers rated HP claims. The dyno doesn't lie.

youre assuming that all trucks are identical to the one you dyno'd. just a TB spacer is a great mod and should give a noticeable increase. flushing youre radiator is definitey worth the money, because all you need is a hose; and keeping youre engine cool is essential. the airbox mod alone with a new filter cam give 4 or 5 more HP. I have dyno'd my truck to check HP increase after each mod, and I WAS satisfied. but i agree a chip is best for a little motor.

I have a 2000 3.0ltr V6...I wouldn't mind putting a performance chip in...Does anyone know where I could get one?...And for how much $$?...How difficult are they to swap?...And one final, how much gain can one expect?....Thanks everyone.
