1999 323i Engine warning light

I need help ASAP. I dodnt' have an owner's manual and don't know what this light means? Can anyone help? Is the car safe to drive? Thanks!

Take your car to an Autozone in your area to check what codes come up its free its a starting point. Or it can be the gas cap was loose when you installed it incorrectly. you can drive with it on but its nice to know whats going on with it

yeah I have the same car as you do and my check engine light goes on every now and than when I dont tighten the gas cap tight enough, but once I do the light usually goes off in a few days. I doesnt go off right away becasue you car will preform 3 random checks peroidically and if everything checks out than it will go off. Usually when you turn the car on it will no longer be their, it never went away for me while the car was running. But it wont do it right away give it 1-3 days. if not that than I would have it checked.
